Three Simple Reasons Why an Assault-Weapons Ban Is Bad Policy
by freemindfade ini keep saying this is a bad place/policy to put all the time, energy and resources if you really do in fact care, or if you are just riding the agenda bandwagon: .
an assault-weapons ban is irrelevant to suicide deaths.
the large majority of gun deaths are suicides, and there is no credible argument that an assault-weapons ban will have the slightest effect on suicide.

I rather enjoy these discussions. They do sometimes get off the rails, but I think they overwhelming productive. Multiple perspectives on any given topic is going to be beneficial.

Father of Pulse gunman was FBI informant...
by freemindfade ini am not really sure what to make of all this yet, its just coming out so who knows what is real and fake yet, but if its true it seems the news coming out about seddique mateen & the fbi is yet another bureua failure.
as an informant for years mateen actually helped to clear his terrorist son of any scrutiny by the fbi, then he killed 49 and wounded dozens of others.
this kind of crap is actually giving credibility to the wearers of tin foil hats .

That would have only prevented him from "legally" purchasing the firearms. It wouldn't have addressed the underline issues that were the driving force for his actions. Granted, the indictment would have made it difficult for him to get the weapons through legal means, but it wouldn't have prevented him from purchasing the weapons through more unsavory methods such as black markets.
This is something gun control proponents have a hard time addressing....INTENT. You can't legislate away someone's intent.

I feel like the WT really shows their hand when they attack websites that are critical of them. If it's truly nothing more than "Bitter Apostate Lies," then why go through the hassle of taking legal action? I don't get it

Is the USA too big?
by Diogenesister infred deftone on another thread about the tragic events at m. stoneman douglas school:.
the us constitution wasn't written for 50 states either.
the country has gotten too big and i think the solution is fragmentation.

Democrats ultimately still support Capitalism. Regardless of the "Socialistic" type of policies they occasionally propose to appease Progressives.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MR65ZhO6LGA
Even the Democratic Socialism proposed by Berniecrats is just a "nicer" version of Capitalism. But still involves Capitalism nonetheless.
Unless someone is literally calling for workers to seize the means of production and put it under the control of the workers, it's hard for me to see how they are socialists. Just saying.....

Have you ever gone back to a meeting out of curiosity?
by stuckinarut2 injust wondering if anyone has gone back to a meeting out of curiosity?
(perhaps to an area far from your old khall where you know no one).
with all the changes from 2012 onwards (videos, tv screens, new meeting format, new songs etc) it would be an odd experience to be in attendance!.

The last time I ever step foot in a KH was a few years ago for my Grandfather's funeral. Sadly, I will be forced to have to step foot in another one since my grandmother is currently in hospice and could pass any day now.
Before my grandfather's funeral, it had been at least 5+ years since I had even been within the vicinity of a KH. Aside from the TV's and new songs, everything is exactly the same.

US violent crimes and murders rose in 2016, the FBI says
by Simon ini can't remember the exact topic but i think a few people predicted the same thing - that the blm movement would cause an increase in violent deaths of young black men, ultimately doing more harm than good.. and so it has: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-41391333.
an 8.6% rise in the homicide rate is pretty appalling by any standard unless it started at very low levels, which we know it didn't.. this is why i object to movements based on false premises and invented media lies / selective coverage.
the people who suffer the most are not the ones marching in the streets.

For those of us that fade our friends and family will always hold out hope that we return. The constant requests that we do so is the price we must pay to be able to continue having a relationship with our families.
Couldn't have said it better. I still get invited to the Memorial and Assemblies every year LOL

I have lurked around the site for about 3 months and finally decided to join. This will be my first time creating a topic here. A little backstory for me. I am a second generation JW. Currently in my early 30's. Both parents were raised as JWs, so I was thrown into the fun by way of birth. So from birth until about 13 years old, I was regularly attending meetings and book studies. Hated every second of it. Elementary school was exceptionally hard during the holidays. I was always singled out and bullied by the other kids for not participating in the holiday festivities or birthday celebrations for fellow students. Always grilled with questions as to why I didn't salute the flag or celebrate holidays. I grew to resent being a JW during those times. When I was 13, my older brother was arrested for attempted murder because of a drive by shooting he was involved in that left 2 people paralyzed (it's a really long story that I will share in greater detail another time). After that went down, my family was treated like pariahs. It really did a number on my family. They ended up going inactive for about 2 years. Once they started becoming active again, I was 15 going on 16, and by that time, I had firmly made it clear that I was not going back. They made some attempts to guilt me into going by using the whole "Look at how much you are hurting your Grandmother by not going to the meetings! All we want is for you to have a good relationship with Jehovah!" nonsense, but kinda gave up on it when they realized I wasn't susceptible to their brand of manipulation.
Although I was POMO since my early teens, I found that some of the indoctrination I endured as a child really reared it's ugly head and caused me to feel this lingering sense of guilt about celebrating holidays and birthdays. Even up until last year, I was still feeling guilty about celebrating Christmas. This year, I just let all that guilt go and fully enjoyed myself for the first time. Words cannot explain how liberating it is to finally free myself of the mental and emotional chains that were instilled in me as a child. Just wanted to share this with everyone. Thanks for listening!

None. Nationalism creates an "us" and "them" and seeks to legitimize state violence towards vulnerable members of a given society. It consistently and undoubtedly leads to violence. This ideology is especially dangerous because they present themselves as natives valiantly defending the "Homeland," and that danger is compounded with attempts to tie "National Identity" to race. It would be entertaining to hear to racist present an argument in favor of it LOL
